[…] ABC of Learning and Teaching in Medicine: BMJ series […]
I have just completed editing training materials under “Effective approaches to teaching medical sciences” . My trainees (medical practitioners ) felt astonished to get such training and material written by a non-medical specialist. To make them accept me as their trainer, I told them that teaching/learning theory is an educationalist’s task rather than a physician’s. Beside me , there were two other trainers who teach medical sciences in the faculty, but they didn’t study educational courses. In fact, we have a dilemma ? Who is entitled to deal with teaching medical sciences. Most of instructors in faculties of medicine are medical specialists who have never been exposed to training in teaching , and they hardly accept to be trained by others from outside the discipline. Remarkably , most of themes shown above are very familiar in educational literature. However , the theory of teaching/learning medicine should focus on strong association between theory and practice , a mechanism that educational specialists can not realize. My solution is to locate at least one professor ,with specialty in education, in each medical department but he /she should be trained in medical culture. He or she will help in training physicians who undertake teaching tasks to recognize teaching methods, select and develop authentic medical materials, guide assessment procedures , be able to solve problems of class management, motivation , and …etc. With regard to practice , the job should be entirely left to physicians who are well trained in practical clinical teaching and learning.

[…] ASME has published a 2010 book called Understanding Medical Education. This fairly lengthy textbook is quite reasonably priced and is available in a kindle version. At a similar price for a more succinct BMJ publication you could look at the ABC of Learning and Teaching in Medicine, although I think it is only in hard copy as a book. It is a similar presentation to their ABC books on clinical topics. However, the fourteen individual articles are available online in the BMJ via PubMed https://annietv600.wordpress.com/2006/05/13/the-abc-of-learning-and-teaching-in-medicine-bmj-series-… […]
